- Researchers for the first time demonstrate how a cellular genetic network completely "rewires" itself in response to stress by DNA-damaging agents, using a new technology termed "differential epistasis maps."

- Researchers at Harvard develop a noninvasive imaging technique that captures images at the molecular level so quickly that they can "watch"red blood cells move through the capillaries of a live mouse, a potential alternative to painful and time-consuming skin biopsies.

- By developing detailed models of brain energy metabolism, bioengineers aim to explain why some types of neurons die sooner than others in the brains of people with Alzheimer's disease, in the first study where this type of ?in silico? modeling approach has been used to document how the metabolism of a specific human cell type affects the metabolism of another.

- Engineers discover how to harness and exploit viruses' "self-renewing" and "self-assembling" properties to build a new generation of really small, powerful, and highly efficient lithium ion batteries and fuel cells.

- In a review paper published in Science titled "Manufacturing molecules through metabolic engineering," Jay Keasling discusses the ever expanding potential of metabolic engineering, stressing that "when more of these tools are available, metabolic engineering should be just as powerful as synthetic organic chemistry, and together the two disciplines can greatly expand the number of chemical products available from renewable resources."

It has been a great year for SBE and this could not have been possible without the support of the SBE volunteers and staff. We would like to thank the SBE Managing Board and Advisory Board for their leadership. A special thank you goes out to the SBE members for all their support and commitment to SBE and to the field of biological engineering. SBE would like to wish you a very happy and healthy Holiday Season!

| SBE recently launched a Web-Lab initiative that aims to web-enable laboratory experiments. Working under a grant from the United Engineering Foundation and in cooperation with several universities and engineering societies, the initiative is developing tools that could enhance undergraduate education. SBE would like to thank UEF as well as MIT, NC State, RPI and the University of Arizona for participating in the pilot program. |
