- Engineers have developed a scalable synthetic route for generating a range of naturally occurring, as well as novel, taxadiene-based taxane compounds and derivatives, for both the production of Taxol (paclitaxel) and for drug discovery.

- A lab group has developed a method using stem cells obtained from human embryos to successfully treat Parkinson's disease in mice and rats. The cells were also successfully transplanted into rhesus monkeys, whose biology is closer to that of humans.

- Researchers have reported a discovery of the path that breast cancer takes to reach the lungs, a form of metastasis. Metastasis transforms breast cancer from a local, curable disease, to one that is systemic and lethal. This finding could soon lead to clinical trials.

- A small startup company has demonstrated the use of supercritical water in biomass processing where the cellulose is broken down into sugars for ethanol fermentations. The low cost process takes seconds at the pilot scale and the company is looking to scale up its pilot plant.

- Researchers in Zurich, Switzerland, are developing nanomagnets that could potentially strip harmful substances from the blood. The technology is targeted to treat individuals suffering from drug intoxication, bloodstream infections, and certain cancers.
