Scientists develop a new method providing researchers the ability to attach chemical probes onto proteins and subsequently remove them in a repeatable cycle, allowing to better understand the biochemistry of naturally formed proteins to develop better antibiotics, anti-cancer drugs, biofuels, food crops and other natural products.
UCSD
Researchers lead by Jackie Ying at the Institute of Bioengineering and Nanotechnology developed a new catalyst for fuel cells, using a mixture of gold, copper and platinum nanoparticles instead of pure platinum nanoparticles, making it of 5 times higher activity and much greater stability than the commercial platinum catalyst, as well as less costly.
IBN
Engineers led by Bernhard Palsson brought together many years of work on the behavior of individual enzymes to produce a genome-scale model of E. coli metabolism, and report that at least 37% of its enzymes catalyze multiple chemical reactions in living cells. In short the study shows that "many enzymes are still pretty sloppy and promiscuous."
UCSD
In a new study, researchers demonstrate a new tool for visually tracking in real-time the transformation of a living population of stem cells into cells of a specific tissue. These "molecular beacons," light up when certain genes are expressed and don't interfere with the development or operation of the cells and can become powerful tools to discover what it may take to make stem cells transform into desired tissue cells more often and more quickly.

Joule and Audi announced a partnership, in which Audi will test and validate Joule's fuels for the auto industry. The deal with Audi helps validate Joule's technology and gives Audi a potentially important relationship as it seeks to be a leader in carbon-neutral driving.
